Great point. I’ve personally come to believe that benefits and protections should be portable, but perhaps, so should income. And thus, a truly 21st century social contract might include both portable benefits, as well as the universal basic income. (I tried to connect the two in this piece on Pacific Standard).
I also recently launched the Economic Security Project with collaborators to jumpstart the research, campaigns and arts and cultural work around the idea of cash for all, or the universal basic income. We need to move beyond the theoretical.
